How To Mind Map
Keep to these and your mind maps will be more
useful and effective.
- Start in the middle of a sheet of plain paper.
- Turn the sheet so it is on its side (landscape mode!)
- Create a central coloured frame, shape or image for the title
of your topic. Keep your title short and accurate.
- From this central shape draw thick organic lines for the main
points you wish to develop. These are your basic ideas. In
Geography they frequently equate to the NATURE of the issues, the
CAUSES of the issue and the MANAGEMENT of the issue. Avoid
too many of these first branches. Use one single colour for
each branch.
- Use images and symbols wherever appropriate (you can even try
using just symbols and images to represent your ideas).
- Your image
or word should sit on the line and should be the same length as
the line – this keeps your map tidy and easier
to view.
- Make your map flow; ideas should logically lead on from what
has gone before.
- Use single words where possible – you may
have to sacrifice some detail.
- Print your words.
- Make sure your map fits the space – you
may have to keep your writing quite small.
- Develop a personal style – include humour!
You can of course use these rules when using electronic
mind mapping software – although the layout will be taken
care of for you – less personalised but much easier!
